Explore Our Rainbow Walk …

rainbowwalk

Adjacent to the gardens entrance is the Rainbow Walk, in which you can view a profusion of tropical trees, shrubs and perennial plants and even a cactus garden. More than a quarter mile of paved pathways wind through the acres of plants in the Rainbow Walk, but visitors are encouraged to meander off the walkways for a closer look or to take pictures.

In this area, you can see blooming anthuriums, azaleas, bougainvillea, bromeliads, crinums, gingers, heliconias, hibiscus, and many other tropical flowering perennials, ferns, shrubs, and trees.

Many varieties of orchids festoon the plants in the Rainbow Walk or cling to the Orchid Wall with new blooms popping out almost every day. Orchids may be near your feet on a stump, peeping out from a pile of logs or hiding on a low-growing bush. They’re in almost every tree, living anywhere from a few feet off the ground to high in the canopy. The orchids come in almost every color from white to almost black. Many are very fragrant and one even smells like chocolate! See cattleyas, dendrobiums, phalaenopsis, vandas, and other species often with several varieties on the same tree.

Did You Know…?

Maile

Alyxia Oilviformis – Maile

Back then and right now, the people of Hawai’i felt and feel a special love for the fragrant bark and leaves of this wild forest climber. Pulled into long streamers and twined together, strips of maile make a scarf-like lei that is traditionally worn by any person experiencing a grand moment. This plant embodies Laka, the goddess of the hula.

Maile (pronounced “my lay”) is partly vine, partly shrub. Because it assumes a variety of forms and leaf-shapes, the old Hawaiians gave it several names, and modern botanists have tried far more. Current wisdom, though, gives maile one name as a species – Alyxia Oilviformis (the leaf is somewhat Olive-leaf-like in form)-and admits that the plant comes in many shapes. The genus Alyxia includes about 120 species that occur throughout the Pacific rim, but maile itself is endemic to Hawai’i. Regardless of its leaf shape, its spicy vanilla fragrance (which intensifies as the leaves wilt) conveys the same honor.

The botanical family that includes maile has a knack for showy flowers, such as: oleander, yellow oleander, allarnanda, periwinkle, and mandevilla. The same family also includes one of Hawai’i’s most familiar trees, the plumeria.

In 1790: The Olowalu Massacre Occurs…

GeckoLike a lei floating on the surface of the sea, a young chain of islands, the pearls of the Pacific, came to grace the middle of the ocean. Rising up from the depths to become the world’s tallest mountains, the Hawai’ian Islands with a warm tropical climate and soft flowing trade winds became a unique natural environment for plants, animals and finally human culture.

.

This is our story, this is the story of Hawai’i…

Off of Honua’ula, Maui a skirmish that came to be called the Olowalu Massacre happened. Capt. Simon Metcalfe moored his trading vessal the “Eleanora” off shore, possibly at Makena Bay, to trade for needed supplies. An Ali’i (Chief) killed a guard and took one of Metcalfe’s small boats. Enraged, Metcalfe sailed off to Olowalu (Turtle Reef) to trade for pigs, while the Village’s Kalola, chiefess and princess, aware of the volatile nature of the situation, decreed a three-day kapu (taboo) on all canoes coming within reach of the “Eleanora”. When the kapu was lifted and Kalola’s husband Kaopuiki returned only the stolen boat’s keel and the guard’s stripped thighbones, an infuriated Metcalfe persuaded trading canoes to approach the “Eleanora” and then opened fire with the ship’s guns. Over 100 Hawai’ians were killed in the battle with over 100 others wounded. Hawai’ians called to the massacre as Kalolopahu, or spilled brains.

Experience Our Arboretum…

arboretum

Across from the Rainbow Walk is the Arboretum. This section is bordered by a twin row of gigantic Norfolk Island pines, a driveway lined with majestic Royal Palms and the Hanapueo Stream. It covers several acres and includes large numbers of specimens, especially trees that produce flowers, fruits and nuts. These include abiu, several species of bananas, Brazilian cherries, breadfruit, cashew, cinnamon, citrus, jack fruit, longan, lychee, macadamia, miracle fruit, ohia, palms of many types, papaya, paradise nuts, and sapote to name just a few.

Large areas of grass and hand-decorated tables set in amongst the trees allow you to relax and enjoy views of the gardens or the ocean while eating your picnic lunch or just relaxing on the greensward. During the winter, you can watch humpback whales playing in the ocean while you enjoy your picnic.
