Did You Know…?

Cassia grandis

Cassia grandis

This tree produces large clusters of pink five-pedaled flowers on the current season’s growth. The flowers are followed by the production of large numbers of long (18 – 24 inches), cylindrical black pods about ¾ inch in diameter that mature during the winter season and litter the ground beneath the tree for several months. Inside each pod are a considerable number of easily separated dime-sized “wafers”, each containing a single light brown hard seed.

There is no shortage of seedling trees beneath the parent tree. Flowering is improved by moderate to heavy pruning, which results in the production of numerous long and vigorous flowering shoots. Regular pruning is also necessary to remove branches that die back due to heavy shading by branches growing above them. This species is one of the parents of the sterile hybrid “Rainbow Shower Tree” planted along portions of Kamehameha Drive in downtown Hilo.

Sunday May 31st is Trinity Sunday in United States…

Trinity Sunday

Trinity Sunday is the first Sunday after Pentecost and is celebrated by many Christians in the United States. It is one of the few feasts that are celebrated as a doctrine instead of an event. It is also symbolic of the unity of the Trinity.

Pope Gregory IX instituted Trinity Sunday in 828 CE. This day is notable for being the only major Christian festival that celebrates a doctrine of the church rather than an event in its sacred history. It is dedicated to the Christian belief in the Trinity – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – and falls on the Sunday following Pentecost each year. The belief of one God in three elements is a distinctive of the Christian faith but the early church was plagued by contrary views. Trinity Sunday spread throughout the western church around the 14th century.

The ordinal Sundays following Trinity Sunday are focused on Christian growth and discipleship after a long period of emphasis on the life and ministry of Jesus. In the Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic churches, the Sunday of Pentecost itself is called Trinity Sunday.

Trinity Sunday is not a federal holiday in the United States.

Explore Our Self-Guided Gardens and Waterfalls Tour…

Waterfall(2)

On a self-guided tour, you can first drive to the spectacular Kamaee Falls waterfall*. Along the way, you can view exotic palms, banana, kukui and hala trees then wind your way through hau, hibiscus and native Hawaiian plants on your way back to the lush Rainforest Trail.

Wander along the paved and handicapped accessible Rainforest Trail alongside the tumbling Hanapueo Stream as you examine such tropicals as ginger, heliconia, green and red jade vine and bamboo beneath a shady canopy of rainforest trees.

For the adventuresome, you can walk an additional mile through the unpaved Rainforest Trail extension to view the wilder portions of the rainforest as well as a variety of spice trees planted along the trail.

Returning to the gardens entrance, you can take our paved walkways through the landscaped Rainbow Walk filled with anthuriums, bromeliads, palms, ti, cinnamon, allspice, the pencil tree and scores of other tropical species. Don’t miss the Orchid Wall and the Children’s Maze. While wandering watch for signs and bring along a Walking Stick audio tour wand. This provides information about many of the plants along the Rainbow Walk and others throughout the various gardens.

If you still have time, wander at leisure through the grassy lawns of our Arboretum to view trees filled with flowers, fruits and nuts. Be sure to hunt for the many varieties of orchids blooming in the trees.

In 1863, Kamehameha V ascends the throne…

GeckoLike a lei floating on the surface of the sea, a young chain of islands, the pearls of the Pacific, came to grace the middle of the ocean. Rising up from the depths to become the world’s tallest mountains, the Hawaiian Islands with a warm tropical climate and soft flowing trade winds became a unique natural environment for plants, animals and finally human culture.

.

This is our story, this is the story of Hawai’i….

Older brother to Kamehameha IV, His full Hawaiian name prior to his succession was Lota Liholiho Kapuāiwa Kalanimakua Kalanikupuapaikalaninui Aliʻiolani Kalani-a-Kekūanaōʻa, also Known as Lot Kapuāiwa, ascended to the throne as Kamehameha V at age 33. Having served under his brother as Minister of Interior and Minister of Finance, he came to the throne better prepared from an administrative standpoint than any previous king. In addition to his first trip abroad, he traveled to California and British Columbia in 1850. He promoted the cattle industry in Hawai’i, served as president of the graziers’ association, and founded Moloka’i Ranch.

As king, Kamehameha V took steps to strengthen the executive branch of government, writing a new constitution in 1864 that freed the king from the restraints of a Privy Council and kuhina nui. Wanting to protect the health and well-being of native Hawaiians, he refused to legalize hard liquor and limited activities that would further erode the traditional agricultural lifestyle.

Kamehameha V remained a lifelong bachelor. He named his sister Victoria Kamamalu as his heir, but did not name a replacement when she died in 1866. An hour before his death in 1872, he asked Bernice Pauahi Bishop, a great-granddaughter of Kamehameha I, to take the throne but she declined. With no successor named, the constitution dictated an election by legislators to name the next monarch.

Did You Know…?

Spathoglottis unguiculata

Spathoglottis unguiculata ‘Grapette’

This is considered to be a terrestrial orchid, because its roots grow in the soil, which is considered normal for the large majority of land plants, but not so typical of most orchid species. Thus, the majority of orchids in our Gardens are categorized as being epiphytic in regards where their roots thrive—growing on other plants (especially trees) or even on rocks—places with perfect drainage and extensive exposure to ambient atmospheric conditions, so that makes this variety an unusual one for our Garden.

This particular variety of orchid will grow well in a sunny location or in a partially shaded one, and blooms for much of the warm season. There are at least two other colors available for this species: pink and white. Another naturalized species of Spathoglottis grows wild on the Big Island and Oahu; it is known as the Philippine Ground Orchid.

Visit Our Children’s Maze…

Childrens Maze

Adjacent to the Rainbow Walk is our Children’s Maze, the world’s second largest permanently planted maze. Covering an area more than the size of a football field, it consists of thousands of mock orange bushes planted in a regular array of hedge work.

With lots of false turns and only one correct path, this maze is fun for young and old alike. The hedge is kept to a height of five feet, so as to allow adults to see over the hedges if necessary, but still allow everyone to wander the paths to find their way to the only correct exit.
