Experience Our Arboretum…

arboretum

Across from the Rainbow Walk is the Arboretum. This section is bordered by a twin row of gigantic “Cook Island Pines”, so named for the islands discovered on Captain Cook’s voyages. a driveway lined with majestic Royal Palms and the Hanapueo Stream. It covers several acres and includes large numbers of specimens, especially trees that produce flowers, fruits and nuts. These include abiu, several species of bananas, Brazilian cherries, breadfruit, cashew, cinnamon, citrus, jack fruit, longan, lychee, macadamia, miracle fruit, ohia, palms of many types, papaya, paradise nuts, and sapote to name just a few.

Bird of paradise, bougainvillea, gingers, heliconias, hibiscus, orchids, plumeria and many other plants bloom throughout the arboretum.

Large areas of grass and hand-decorated tables set in amongst the trees allow you to relax and enjoy views of the gardens or the ocean while eating your picnic lunch or just relaxing on the greensward. During the winter, you can watch humpback whales playing in the ocean while you enjoy your picnic.

Did You Know…?

Melaleuca quinquenerva

Melaleuca quinquenerva.

This tree is native to Australia. Its leaves contain an aromatic oil, and they are sometimes used to brew a tea. Each leaf exhibits 5 base-to-tip veins that run more-or-less parallel to the leaf margin, and these are called “nerves”, hence the species name, quinquenerva.

The most interesting aspect of this tree are the multiple layers of peeling, soft, papery bark that coat the trunk and larger branches. Large sheets of paper-like bark can be peeled from the trunk (please don’t try here!). The creamy-white blossoms (mostly stamens) are clustered along the stems, and develop into small hard nut-like fruits clustered along the stems. These contain tiny seeds, and remain closed for many years on the plant. In the event of a fire, the fruit capsules gradually open due to the intense heat, and the seeds fall out a few days after the fire is out, to reseed the scorched landscape. In Florida these trees were planted to help take up water from the Everglades. There they reseed themselves naturally, due to periodic fires in the Everglades, and form dense stands that are impenetrable, even by the local deer population. The species is considered a pest in Florida.

In 1879, The Cornerstone is laid for `Iolani Palace…

GeckoLike a lei floating on the surface of the sea, a young chain of islands, the pearls of the Pacific, came to grace the middle of the ocean. Rising up from the depths to become the world’s tallest mountains, the Hawaiian Islands with a warm tropical climate and soft flowing trade winds became a unique natural environment for plants, animals and finally human culture.

.

This is our story, this is the story of Hawai’i….

On December 31, 1879, Queen Kapi’olani’s 45th birthday, King Kalakaua laid the cornerstone of a new palace. The new building retained the name of the old palace, called ‘Iolani after one of Kamehameha IV’s names meaning “hawk of heaven.” Built in an American Florentine style, the new palace was four stories with an attic and basement, two central and four corner towers, and verandahs running on all sides. The interior was of koa, kou, kamani, ‘ohia, American walnut, and Oregon white cedar woods. It was equipped with electric lights and running water. While the palace was used for state occasions and parties (one was a fancy dress children’s ball thrown by Lili’uokalani), neither Kalakaua nor Lili’uokalani used the palace as their primary residence. Kalakaua and Kapi’olani lived mainly at their Bungalow on the palace grounds, while Lili’uokalani lived at Washington Place across the street. Lili’uokalani was later imprisoned, however, in one of the palace’s upper rooms. After the overthrow of the monarchy, she was tried for treason in her own throne room, then imprisoned for eight months before being placed under house arrest at Washington Place and eventually pardoned.

After Annexation in 1898, ‘Iolani Palace served as the capitol of the Territory (and later the State) of Hawai’i. The former throne room was used as the House of Representatives chamber, as the site of Lili’uokalani’s funeral, as a room for special meetings and ceremonies, and as a Red Cross dressing station during World War II. The state dining room later became the senate chamber. In 1969, a new state capitol was built and historical restoration of ‘Iolani Palace began.

Did You Know…?

Flame of the Woods

Ixora coccinia

There are a number of different species of Ixora, and quite a few cultivated varieties of some species. The pink Ixora is named ‘Nora Grant’ and the orange-red one with rounded petal tips and a compact, globose inflorescence is called ‘Maui’. One can find them in just about any color except for blue or violet, and most of them bloom throughout the year in a tropical climate.

All Ixoras are broadleaf-evergreen plants, and they range in size from dwarf shrubs less than a foot tall, to small trees up to 25 feet in height. Some of them are very fragrant in flower, while others have no detectable fragrance at all. All of these factors make group very popular choice for landscape plantings. Most of them do best in acid soils; if grown on coral-derived soils they often develop iron deficiency—typical in South Florida. They also produce the most flowers when grown in full sun, although the plants will tolerate partially shaded conditions while producing fewer flowers. Local children sometimes pick individual flowers off the plant and suck sweet nectar from the base of the flower, hence it is sometimes called “honeysuckle” in this area.

Sometimes scale insects attack the plants, but otherwise they require little maintenance, other than some minor pruning.
