Celebrate Parents’ Day at Botanical World Adventures…

Parents Day

Parents’ Day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday each year and promotes the message that the role of the parent is important in human development, which requires investment, focus, and commitment. In 1994 President Bill Clinton signed into law a resolution adopted by the US Congress to establish the fourth Sunday of every July as Parents’ Day. This day is similar to Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. According to the Congressional Resolution, Parents’ Day is established for “recognizing, uplifting, and supporting the role of parents in the rearing of children”

The Parents’ Day Council plays an active role in celebrating and promoting Parents’ Day through a range of events and activities.  For example, the council honors “Parents of the Year” at local, state and national levels. Those who have been nominated or selected are people who exemplify the standard and ideal of positive parenthood. Exemplary parents from each state are nominated for “National Parents of the Year”.

Parents’ Day is a popular time for people to send cards and gifts, including flowers, cakes and food hampers, to those who play an important role as a positive parental figure in their lives. It is also a time for families to come together for lunches or dinners. Special tributes to parental figures who are seen as role models are made through local announcements, at church services, or at local community events. Parents’ Day proclamations and rallies have been held in recent times and involved organizations such as the United Civil Rights Councils of America.

Parents’ Day is a national observance but it is not a public holiday in the United States.

Explore Our Self-Guided Gardens and Waterfalls Tour…

Waterfall(2)

On a self-guided tour, you can first drive to the spectacular Kamaee Falls waterfall*. Along the way, you can view exotic palms, banana, kukui and hala trees then wind your way through hau, hibiscus and native Hawaiian plants on your way back to the lush Rainforest Trail.

Wander along the paved and handicapped accessible Rainforest Trail alongside the tumbling Hanapueo Stream as you examine such tropicals as ginger, heliconia, green and red jade vine and bamboo beneath a shady canopy of rainforest trees.

For the adventuresome, you can walk an additional mile through the unpaved Rainforest Trail extension to view the wilder portions of the rainforest as well as a variety of spice trees planted along the trail.

Returning to the gardens entrance, you can take our paved walkways through the landscaped Rainbow Walk filled with anthuriums, bromeliads, palms, ti, cinnamon, allspice, the pencil tree and scores of other tropical species. Don’t miss the Orchid Wall and the Children’s Maze. While wandering watch for signs and bring along a Walking Stick audio tour wand. This provides information about many of the plants along the Rainbow Walk and others throughout the various gardens.

If you still have time, wander at leisure through the grassy lawns of our Arboretum to view trees filled with flowers, fruits and nuts. Be sure to hunt for the many varieties of orchids blooming in the trees.

In 1876, Claus Spreckels arrives in Hawai`i …

GeckoLike a lei floating on the surface of the sea, a young chain of islands, the pearls of the Pacific, came to grace the middle of the ocean. Rising up from the depths to become the world’s tallest mountains, the Hawaiian Islands with a warm tropical climate and soft flowing trade winds became a unique natural environment for plants, animals and finally human culture.

.

This is our story, this is the story of Hawai’i….

German-born Claus Spreckels arrived from California and quickly took advantage of the newly-established Reciprocity Treaty that favored exporters of Hawaiian sugar. Spreckels had been a financier associated with the California Sugar Refinery in San Francisco. In Hawai’i, he bought up the 1877 sugar crop and resold it for a huge profit. He invested in sugar lands, mills, railway lines, and extensive irrigation systems. His empire, Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company, became one of the most successful sugar operations in the Islands. Spreckels was a poker-playing companion of King Kalakaua and won political favors in return for personal loans. When Spreckels’ influence began to wane, he moved back to San Francisco (1886) but returned to Hawai’i regularly. After the overthrow of the monarchy, he supported returning Lili’uokalani to the throne, but gradually withdrew his money from his island investments. He sold his Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company to Alexander & Baldwin.

Visit Our Maze For All Ages…

Childrens Maze

Adjacent to the Rainbow Walk is our Maze For All Ages, the world’s second largest permanently planted maze. Covering an area more than the size of a football field, it consists of thousands of mock orange bushes planted in a regular array of hedge work.

With lots of false turns and only one correct path, this maze is fun for young and old alike. The hedge is kept to a height of five feet, so as to allow adults to see over the hedges if necessary, but still allow everyone to wander the paths to find their way to the only correct exit.

Did You Know…?

Red-Edge Dracaena

Dracaena reflexa

This plant has been a main-stay of the tropical foliage plant industry for many years, known by the name Dracaena marginata. However, recent research, some of which has involved DNA technology, has led to the reclassification of this plant (as well as many others), thereby resulting in a “new” and likely unfamiliar name for an old-time favorite plant.

One can find very large, old and mature Red-Edge Dracaena plants growing in the Hilo area, and some of them have actually flowered. Locally they are sometimes called “money plants” by older people, because stem cuttings were sold to commercial foliage plant growers from larger-sized landscape plants for extra cash a number of years ago when demand for cuttings exceeded the supply available from stock plant fields. Stem cuttings of just about any length root easily in just a few weeks by inserting the basal end into growing medium and keeping it damp.

However, it is beneficial to wait about a week after making the cutting to reduce the likelihood of stem rot before planting it.
