Did You Know…?

Codiaeum variegatum

Codiaeum variegatum

The leaves of these tropical plants are typically brightly and strikingly colored in various hues of red, orange, yellow, green and almost black, and may be variously shaped.

Most varieties thrive in full sun, where they attain their brightest coloration, although many do well in rather shaded conditions. For this reason they are sometimes used as house-plants, but are most often seen as colorful highlights in the tropical landscape.

Crotons were “discovered” in New Guinea, by the Dutch East Indies Trading Company, and were brought to Holland and extensively hybridized by plant breeders there, to be sold as fancy plants to the well-to-do of society in the 18th century.

The plants are monoecious, producing both male inflorescences and separate female inflorescences on the same plant. They are intolerant of frost, and won’t thrive in areas where the temperatures drop below 50 F. The sap of the plant can badly stain clothing, but is not known for any irritating qualities to the skin. Cuttings are easily rooted in a humid chamber with subdued light and can also be easily air-layered in 8 to 10 weeks.

Explore Our Rainbow Walk…

rainbowwalk

Adjacent to the gardens entrance is the Rainbow Walk, in which you can view a profusion of tropical trees, shrubs and perennial plants and even a cactus garden. More than a quarter mile of paved pathways wind through the acres of plants in the Rainbow Walk, but visitors are encouraged to meander off the walkways for a closer look or to take pictures.

In this area, you can see blooming anthuriums, azaleas, bougainvillea, bromeliads, crinums, gingers, heliconias, hibiscus, and many other tropical flowering perennials, ferns, shrubs, and trees.

Many varieties of orchids festoon the plants in the Rainbow Walk or cling to the Orchid Wall with new blooms popping out almost every day. Orchids may be near your feet on a stump, peeping out from a pile of logs or hiding on a low-growing bush. They’re in almost every tree, living anywhere from a few feet off the ground to high in the canopy. The orchids come in almost every color from white to almost black. Many are very fragrant and one even smells like chocolate! See cattleyas, dendrobiums, phalaenopsis, vandas, and other species often with several varieties on the same tree.

Saturday October 31st is Halloween in United States…

Haloween2

Halloween originated as a pagan festival in parts of Northern Europe, particularly around what is now the United Kingdom. Many European cultural traditions hold that Halloween is a time when magic is most potent and spirits can make contact with the physical world. In Christian times, it became a celebration of the evening before All Saints’ Day. Immigrants from Scotland and Ireland brought the holiday to the United States.

Halloween is usually celebrated amongst family, friends and, sometimes, co-workers. However, some areas hold large community events. Parties and other events may be planned on October 31 or in the weekends before and after this date. Adults may celebrate by watching horror films, holding costume parties or creating haunted houses or graveyards.

Many children dress up in fancy costumes and visit other homes in the neighborhood. At each house, they demand sweets, snacks or a small gift. If they do not get this, they threaten to do some harm to the inhabitants of the house. This is known as playing ‘trick-or-treat’ and is supposed to happen in a friendly spirit, with no nasty or mean tricks being carried out. However, if your children take part, it is important to accompany them and to check their ‘treats’ to make sure they are safe to eat or play with.

In Hawaii Las Vegas, Nevada is considered the 9th island.

Did You Know…?

Cinnamomum zeylanicum

Cinnamomum zeylanicum

Other members of this plant Family include the Avocado and the Bay Leaf Tree. Cinnamon is made from grinding up dried bark strips taken from mature, green stems that are cut from the tree. One can also buy “stick cinnamon” in a box; you can see how these “sticks” are just dried bark rolls removed from the stems. Cinnamon oil is distilled from bark stripped from 2 -3 year-old stems.

Cinnamon was part of the valuable spice trade that ran from east Africa into Europe in biblical times.

The tree produces distinctive, shiny, 6-inch long, medium-green leaves that appear to droop downwards. The new shoot growth appears wilted as the leaves enlarge and usually has a reddish tint that fades as it matures. The leaves each contain three prominent veins (nerves) running from the leaf base to its tip. Trees require protection from windy conditions, as the leaves will become dry and die at their tips and margins if planted in exposed sites. The tree can attain a trunk diameter in excess of 6 feet and a height in excess of 50 feet.
