Did You Know…?

Jatropha podagracaJatropha podagraca

This plant gets its name from the swollen base of its gray-barked, otherwise slender trunk, which resemble a gout-afflicted finger and swollen joint. The bromeliaof growing around the base of the plant make it difficult to see the basal swelling. It produces rather rounded leaves which have the petiole attached towards the center of the blade. Such a leaf is called a peltate leaf, and is not a very common leaf type. Nasturtium, Taro and Lotus are other examples of plants producing peltate leaves.

The inflorescence is a bright red-orange, and consists of numerous small male flowers surrounding a few larger female flowers. If a fruit or two develops, it grows as a 3-lobed green capsule which turns brown at maturity, with each lobe or chamber of the capsule containing one peanut-sized seed. The plant is easy to grow from a seed, and grows best in full sun.

Groundhog Day falls on February 2nd in the United States.

Groundhog DayGroundhog Day is a popular observance in many parts of the United States. Although some states have in some cases adopted their own groundhogs, the official groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, lives at Gobbler’s Knob near Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

Punxsutawney held its first Groundhog Day in the United States in the 1800s. The first official trek to Gobbler’s Knob was made on February 2, 1887. It is said that Punxsutawney Phil (the groundhog) was named after King Phillip. He was called Br’er Groundhog prior to being known as Phil.

The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club plays an important role in organizing Groundhog Day in the town. Club members, news reporters, locals and visitors meet at Gobbler’s Knob on February 2 each year to await Phil’s appearance and his weather prediction. Many weather researchers questioned the groundhog’s accuracy in predicting the weather but some of the groundhog’s fans may not agree.

Groundhog Day is an observance but it is not a public holiday in the United States.

Explore Our Self-Guided Gardens and Waterfalls Tour

Waterfall(2)

On a self-guided tour, you can first drive to the spectacular Kamaee Falls waterfall*. Along the way, you can view exotic palms, banana, kukui and hala trees then wind your way through hau, hibiscus and native Hawaiian plants on your way back to the lush Rainforest Trail.

Wander along the paved and handicapped accessible Rainforest Trail alongside the tumbling Hanapueo Stream as you examine such tropicals as ginger, heliconia, green and red jade vine and bamboo beneath a shady canopy of rainforest trees.

For the adventuresome, you can walk an additional mile through the unpaved Rainforest Trail extension to view the wilder portions of the rainforest as well as a variety of spice trees planted along the trail.

Returning to the gardens entrance, you can take our paved walkways through the landscaped Rainbow Walk filled with anthuriums, bromeliads, palms, ti, cinnamon, allspice, the pencil tree and scores of other tropical species. Don’t miss the Orchid Wall and the Children’s Maze. While wandering watch for signs and bring along a Walking Stick audio tour wand. This provides information about many of the plants along the Rainbow Walk and others throughout the various gardens.

If you still have time, wander at leisure through the grassy lawns of our Arboretum to view trees filled with flowers, fruits and nuts. Be sure to hunt for the many varieties of orchids blooming in the trees.

The ‘Valley of Kings’ the beautiful Waipi’o Valley…

Waipi'o ValleyThe Waipi’o valley can be described as a lush, tropical, fairytale valley with many waterfalls and a black sand surfers beach. If you park your car at at the end of Hwy 240 from Honoka’a, you can stroll to the Waipio Valley Lookout. Here you can read about the royal and disastrous history of the valley (a Tsunami in 1946 wiped almost the whole valley clean), and take some postcard perfect pictures of Wapi’o Valley.

This is where the ‘fun’ starts. You will have to hike down the Waipi’o Valley access road. This road gains 800 vertical feet in only 0.6 miles, and has a 25% average grade! It is only accessible to 4WD cars (and rightly so, loosing control over you car on this road would mean certain dead, as witnessed from the many overgrown car wrecks on the cliff!). Take it slow on this road, you are not in a hurry and the payoff will be amazing!

On the bottom of the road, turn right to reach Waipi’o Beach after a short (10 min) hike. This fine grain black sand beach is popular with surfers. If you want to take a dip to cool down please go ahead, but be careful for the strong currents – don’t let the water get higher than your hips.

If you have spare time on your hands, consider to also turn left (coming from the lookout) on the bottom of the valley, you will find taro-fields, and probably will spot some wild horses. You can also see the 1400 feet high Hi’ilawe on the far left of the valley from here.

Make sure to take plenty of water, some food and a trash bag to pack out everything you take in. Did you know that the ending of the blockbuster “Water World” was filmed in Waipi’o Valley?

Did You Know…?

Yucca giganteSpineles

Yucca gigante

This plant is frequently seen as a house-plant on the mainland, and it rarely blooms indoors. Here in the Gardens, it blooms in early summer, and possibly again in late summer. Its terminal inflorescence is quite large—up to 5 feet in height—and contains hundreds of creamywhite bell-shaped flowers between 1 and 2 inches wide. From a distance it looks like a big pop-corn ball atop the leafy crown of dark green foliage. Unlike many other species of Yucca, its leaves are not tipped with dangerously long, sharp thorns.

It is easy to start a new plant from a piece of the stem, as it roots easily upon contact with the soil. Here it does not seem to produce any fruits or seeds, probably because there are not suitable pollinators around.

Visit Our Maze For All Ages…

Childrens Maze

Adjacent to the Rainbow Walk is our Maze For All Ages, the world’s second largest permanently planted maze. Covering an area more than the size of a football field, it consists of thousands of mock orange bushes planted in a regular array of hedge work.

With lots of false turns and only one correct path, this maze is fun for young and old alike. The hedge is kept to a height of five feet, so as to allow adults to see over the hedges if necessary, but still allow everyone to wander the paths to find their way to the only correct exit.
