Did You Know…?

Madagascar Butterfly Palm

Dypsis lutscens

This clumping palm is also from Madagascar and was relatively recently re-classified from its previous Genus name of Chrysalidocarpus into the Genus Dypsis, along with several other related Genera. Its common name “Areca” is actually that of an entirely different Genus of palms, the most notable of which is the Betel-Nut Palm. This palm is widely used in our area as a hedge-row or screening plant, and, on the mainland, it is frequently used as a house-plant, as well as being found in many south Florida landscapes.
