Did You Know…?

Myrciaria caulifloraMyrciaria cauliflora

The small-leaved shrub with the smooth tan bark beneath the Mango tree is a Jaboticaba bush. The fruit—a dark purple, round, shiny berry about an inch in diameter—grows directly from the larger stems and the trunk of a large shrub. The creamy-white flowers almost completely cover the “barky” portions of the plant when it blooms (which may happen a couple of times a year), only to be followed in about 3 weeks by an almost complete covering of ¾ to 1 inch diameter grape-like dark purple fruit. This is one of the fastest maturing woody plant type fruits in the world—from flower to ripe fruit in less than a month. The purple “skin” of the fruit is about 1/8 inch thick and has a distinctive spicy taste, a bit like orange peel.

Most people “pop” the berry inside their mouth and suck out the sweet, juicy pulp and spit out the skin and the one to a couple of seeds. Some people make a nice purple jelly from the fruit.

The plants tolerate flooding well, because they originate in the Amazon River flood plain, and are periodically inundated for several weeks during the rainy season. They are typically grown from seed, and, when grown in the ground, can take a decade or longer to reach blooming size. Plants should be grown in full sun to maximize fruit production and quality..

Childrens Maze

Adjacent to the Rainbow Walk is our Maze For All Ages, the world’s second largest permanently planted maze. Covering an area more than the size of a football field, it consists of thousands of mock orange bushes planted in a regular array of hedge work.

With lots of false turns and only one correct path, this maze is fun for young and old alike. The hedge is kept to a height of five feet, so as to allow adults to see over the hedges if necessary, but still allow everyone to wander the paths to find their way to the only correct exit.

Lei Day 2016 is on Sunday, May 1, 2016: How are you celebrating Lei Day?

lei1

Sunday, May 1, 2016 is Lei Day 2016. Lei Day is a state-wide celebration in all of Hawai’i. The celebration begins in the morning of May first every year and continues throughout the entire day and even continues onto the next day.

The most typical festivities on Lei Day are hula, lei making demos and contests, and also the crowning from the Lei Full and her court. What better method to celebrate Lei Day compared to booking a vacation to certainly one of Hawaii’s many resorts! Each island features its own Lei, traditional to every created using flowers, fruit and vines available on that island. Hawaii’s Lei may be the Lehua, produced from blossoms of ‘Ohi’, a Lehua tree which develops around the slopes from the Volcano. Formally designed a vacation in 1929, and continues up to now. The record for that world’s longest Lei was set in the 81st celebration of Lei Day in 2008. Unofficially the Lei measured greater than a mile long.

Officially made a holiday in 1929, and continues to date. The record for the world’s longest Lei was set at the 81st celebration of Lei Day in 2008. Unofficially the Lei measured more than a mile in length.

Did You Know…?

Mangifera indica

Mangifera indica

The Mango is actually a member of the Cashew Nut Family. Plants in the Cashew Nut Family may produce an oil that causes extreme allergic reactions of the skin and/or other types of severe allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Poison Ivy and Poison Oak are also in this plant family. So some people can be allergic to mangoes, which is unfortunate, because the Mango is one of the finest fruits there is.

‘Keitt’ (fall/winter) and ‘Hayden’ (summer) are two choice mango varieties. Fresh mango is great by itself or with vanilla ice-cream or on waffles or in a smoothie. Dried, sliced mango with or without Li Hing (an oriental seasoning) is also a treat. The tree here produces a relatively small, but delicious yellow fruit. Mango trees can become very large and live for many hundreds of years.

Mangoes can be eaten/used when in the green state or anywhere between that and fully ripe. One can make a great “apple” pie with green mangoes. When partially ripe, the flesh is very firm and crunchy and has an acid-semi-sweet taste, and when fully ripe it is similar to a juicy peach in consistency and sometimes flavor. In some varieties the skin is green when the mango is ripe, while in others it turns a beautiful red to red-orange.

Explore Our Rainbow Walk…

rainbowwalk

Adjacent to the gardens entrance is the Rainbow Walk, in which you can view a profusion of tropical trees, shrubs and perennial plants and even a cactus garden. More than a quarter mile of paved pathways wind through the acres of plants in the Rainbow Walk, but visitors are encouraged to meander off the walkways for a closer look or to take pictures.

In this area, you can see blooming anthuriums, azaleas, bougainvillea, bromeliads, crinums, gingers, heliconias, hibiscus, and many other tropical flowering perennials, ferns, shrubs, and trees.

Many varieties of orchids festoon the plants in the Rainbow Walk or cling to the Orchid Wall with new blooms popping out almost every day. Orchids may be near your feet on a stump, peeping out from a pile of logs or hiding on a low-growing bush. They’re in almost every tree, living anywhere from a few feet off the ground to high in the canopy. The orchids come in almost every color from white to almost black. Many are very fragrant and one even smells like chocolate! See cattleyas, dendrobiums, phalaenopsis, vandas, and other species often with several varieties on the same tree.

April 23 begins Passover (first day) in the United States…

Passover

Passover (Pesach) generally lasts for eight days in the United States. Many Jewish people spend the Passover period with family members or close friends. Many people spend the Passover period with family or close friends. They make a special effort to ensure that older people, the poor, and those living alone can take part in the ceremonial meals known as Seder. They may do this by inviting people into their homes or giving them a gift basket. Passover gift baskets are filled with Seder plates and ceremonial foods and wine.  The Passover is celebrated in many Jewish communities in the United States. It includes ceremonial meals and wine.

Passover is not a federal holiday in the United States. However, some Jewish businesses and organizations may be closed or offer a reduced level of service over the Passover period. Passover is related to the Christian observances of Good Friday and Easter Sunday and the Islamic Day of Ashura.
