Did You Know…?

gardenia-coronataGardenia coronata

This Gardenia is a genus of flowering plants in the coffee family, Rubiaceae, native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, Madagascar and Pacific Islands. The genus was named by Carl Linnaeus and John Ellis after Dr. Alexander Garden (1730-1791), a Scottish-born American naturalist.

The flowers are extremely fragrant during their 3 to 4 day life-span. They open creamy-white and then become yellow and finally bright yellow-orange just before they fall from the plant. The flower has a long, slender floral tube up to 3 inches in length that flares out into 6 to 12 petals each about ¾-inch long. Here the plant seems to bloom about every 8 weeks or so, with each blooming period lasting about 2 weeks. It performs best in full sun, but will tolerate some shade. It roots readily from stem cuttings.

Groundhog Day falls on February 2nd in the United States.

Groundhog DayGroundhog Day is a popular observance in many parts of the United States. Although some states have in some cases adopted their own groundhogs, the official groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, lives at Gobbler’s Knob near Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

Punxsutawney held its first Groundhog Day in the United States in the 1800s. The first official trek to Gobbler’s Knob was made on February 2, 1887. It is said that Punxsutawney Phil (the groundhog) was named after King Phillip. He was called Br’er Groundhog prior to being known as Phil.

The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club plays an important role in organizing Groundhog Day in the town. Club members, news reporters, locals and visitors meet at Gobbler’s Knob on February 2 each year to await Phil’s appearance and his weather prediction. Many weather researchers questioned the groundhog’s accuracy in predicting the weather but some of the groundhog’s fans may not agree.

Groundhog Day is an observance but it is not a public holiday in the United States.

Take Our Guided Horticultural Tour…

Swinging Bridge
On our exquisite 2-hour walking tour, one of our horticultural experts will point out fascinating facts about the beautiful flowers and plants in our extensive botanical collection and answer questions about tropical plants.

Your horticultural guide will first lead you to a spectacular view of Kamaee Falls, proclaimed to be one of Hawaii’s most beautiful and pristine waterfalls. This location is a must stop for both novice and professional photographers alike.

From there, you will be taking an unhurried stroll through our tropical Rainforest Trail. Watch other guests zipping high in the forest canopy and listen as our experts explain the many and varied uses of tropical plants, allowing you to smell the flowers and taste some of the ripe fruit. Continuing down the trail, you will encounter a quiet, serene, natural spring-fed stream lined by many of Hawaii’s unique plants and trees.

At the halfway point of your tour, you have the option to add a delicious lunch. Prepared and served for our guests, this unique option must be reserved in advance. Everyone will be able to partake in dessert – a sampling of fresh fruit from our own gardens.

Following the fruit and refreshment break, the group will proceed to our final destination, the magnificent Rainbow Walk. This portion of the tour meanders along a paved walkway surrounded by thousands of tropical plants.

Did You Know…?

myristica-fragransMyristica fragrans

The Nutmeg Tree is an evergreen tree indigenous to the Moluccas (or Spice Islands) of Indonesia. It is important as the main source of the spices nutmeg and mace. It is widely grown across the tropics including Guangdong and Yunnan in China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Grenada in the Caribbean, Kerala in India, Sri Lanka and South America.

Yes, we actually get two spices from this one tree—nutmeg and mace—the latter being derived from a red aril that partially surrounds the nutmeg seed as it develops and matures in the green husk surrounding both. The tree is dioecious, with the specimen in the Rainbow Garden being a female tree. The male tree on the property is in our Arboretum more than 400 yards away from the female, so we are not getting any nutmeg fruits on this tree.
