This palm is the state tree of both Florida and of South Carolina. It has a fan type of leaf, and it is not self-cleaning. The pruned leaf base stubs are called “boots”, and they are arranged spirally around the trunk, and, in a well-pruned specimen, are attractive to the eye.
They are fairly easy to transplant, so long as they have a trunk of at least 5 feet, in which much water is stored and used by the plant in re-establishing its root system. They are used extensively in landscaping projects in the south eastern USA, as they are tolerant of the below-freezing temperatures there in the winter months.
