Palm Family. As you drive along the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island, you can see large numbers of this tall, graceful palm growing in many of the gulches, looking like they are part of the indigenous flora.

Actually, they were brought here from the Australia-New Guinea area and have since become naturalized into the local vegetation. They are used occasionally as landscape plants, but they grow so tall so quickly that they tend get out of proportion with a small site, so, as always, care needs to be taken in the planning process to choose the right plant for the location.
