Did You Know…?

Chamaedorea seifrizii.

This Central American clumping palm is frequently utilized as a house-plant, as it tolerates fairly low light conditions typical of indoor light intensities. Here on the wet and cooler side of the Island, we can “get away” with growing it in full sun, but in a less cloudy, warmer location, some afternoon shade is necessary to prevent the sun from burning the leaves.

The plant is well-named, as its stems do resemble bamboo shoots once the leaves fall off, revealing the green stem beneath. Again, each “ring” around the stem marks the place (node) where a leaf was attached. This palm is closely related to another widely grown, but much smaller indoor plant, the Parlour Palm. Each plant is either a male or a female, being dioecious. Our plant is a male.
