Did You Know…?

Agave attenuataAgave attenuata

Unlike many species of Agave, this one is not armed with sharp spines, although the central tip of the plant looks very sharp. The arrangement of the leaves is very symmetrical about the center, and the smooth surface of each leaf is covered with a thin, pale white coating of wax, which is very water repellent and gives the leaves a blue-gray coloration.

When the plant is large enough to bloom (perhaps 5 to 10 years of age), it produces an inflorescence (technically a spike) up to 10 feet in length from which many hundreds of yellow-green flowers are displayed in a brush-like arrangement. Someone with a good imagination likened the display to a giant fox tail. It makes an attractive specimen plant and is a good rock garden subject.
